From Rialto Pictures comes a stunning 2K Restoration of the 96-minute “Final Cut” of writer Anthony Shaffer and director Robin Hardy’s 1973 British shocker, The Wicker Man.
A “potent mix of pagan horror and trippy hippie weirdness” (Hollywood Reporter), The Wicker Man stars Edward Woodward as Police Sergeant Neil Howie, a devoutly Christian inspector who travels by seaplane to a remote Scottish island after receiving an anonymous letter about missing 12-year-old girl Rowan. He soon finds that while the islanders are generally cheery, they welcome neither his badge nor his religious devotion, as Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) and his devoted followers worship only the pagan gods of old. Deeply disturbed by the hedonism and unbridled sexuality on display, Howie’s determination to find Rowan intensifies as he begins to suspect no one is telling him the truth, and that poor Rowan may be in danger of being scarified by the locals.
Initially an obscure midnight movie, The Wicker Man has over the years received that rarest of mutual acclaim from both a rabid horror cult audience, and critics and film historians alike. Alternating seamlessly from mysterious police procedural to darkly humorous comedy of manners to psychedelic hippie musical to acutely disturbing nightmare, The Wicker Man mesmerizes with a singular mood that has earned its place as one of the strangest, most unique horror offerings of the 1970’s.
