BRENT GREEN: A BRIEF SPARK BOOKENDED BY DARKNESS
Apr 28 @ 7:30 pm

“If Mark Twain were with us today, he would probably be engaged in endeavors comparable to Green’s films.”– Saul Ostrow, Art in America

Join us Saturday, April 28 at 7:30pm for Santa Ana Sites: Brent Green – A Brief Spark Bookended by Darkness, a co-presentation between Santa Ana Sites and Grand Central Art Center. Doors open at 7pm.

For this special live event, self-taught visual artist and filmmaker Brent Green will be joined by his long time collaborator, Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, for an experimental live cinema experience, where Green’s acclaimed short films will be screened as Green serves as narrator as Canty serves as percussionist and foley artist. The evening will feature works that all have played at prestigious film festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival, including A Brief Spark Bookended by Darkness, Carlin, Paulina Hollers, and Strange Fates.

Focusing largely on stirring visuals, live music, and foley, the emotionally charged films enchant audiences through lyrical narrations and somber underlying themes with flickering stop-motion Southern Gothic flair.  Don’t miss this very rare opportunity to see these films brought to life with narrations by their creator himself, accompanied with live music by one of the world’s most acclaimed percussionists, recently ranked at #29 by Stylus Magazine on the list of “50 Greatest Rock Drummers.”

$10 General Admission. $8 Students, with ID at box office only.  $7 Frida Cinema Card-carrying Members.

His art is in some fine public collections including MoMA, the Hammer Museum and the American Folk Art Museum. Green is represented by the Andrew Edlin Gallery in NYC.

About Brendan Canty
Canty is best known as the drummer in the band Fugazi. Canty joined Fugazi in 1987, before which time he played in Rites of Spring, One Last Wish, Deadline, Insurrection, and Happy Go Licky. In addition to producing records for all kinds of great band (the Thermals, Ted Leo, Garland of Hours, Benjy Ferree) Canty frequently composes soundtrack music, primarily for Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel documentaries and independent features. In 2004, Canty co-founded the DVD label Trixie to release an ongoing series of music-related films entitled Burn To Shine. The series involves independent bands from a particular city showing up to perform one song each live, without overdubs or corrections, in a condemned house. It’s beautiful. The films and performances are urgent and inspired, and the portraits of musicians and houses expose the transient nature of our world. Trixie has also produced films about Bob Mould, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, Eddie Vedder and the Decemberists. He currently lives in Washington, DC with his wife and four children and has been touring around with his new band Messthetics.

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW: Featuring Live Shadow Cast by K.A.O.S.
May 11 @ 11:30 pm

It’s just a jump to the left…

The Frida Cinema’s resident performance troupe K.A.O.S. returns on Friday, May 11th with their award-winning “shadow cast” of the immortal 1975 cult classic musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

Sing and dance along to the journey of Brad and Janet, two virginal small-town lovers whose car breaks down in the shadows of a creepy old castle, home to faithful handyman Riff, his sister Magenta, tap-dancing Columbia, newborn Eddie, and of course, maniacal Dr. Frank-N-Furter!

An adaptation of Richard O’Brien’s 1973 stage musical, director Jim (Don’t squeeze the…) Sharman’s cult classic stars Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as sweethearts Brad and Janet, who find themselves at the doorstep of an eerie castle after they’re stuck with a flat tire during a storm.  There they discover an odd collective of “unconventional conventionalists,” there to witness transvestite scientist’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s latest creation – a muscular man named Rocky.  As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker Eddie (Meat Loaf), creepy butler Riff Raff (O’Brien himself), Riff Raff’s sister Magenta (Patricia Quinn), and tap-dancing Columbia (Nell Campbell). Sing-along (and shout-along!) to the 1975 classic that still packs houses almost 50 years since it’s release!

Our Rocky Horror shows get packed fast – pick up your tickets today at The Frida Cinema’s box office, or online at the button below!
