It’s been a long time coming, but Japanese genre master Takashi Miike’s shocking, deeply disturbing – and surprisingly, subversively poignant and thought-provoking – 1999 thriller Audition comes to The Frida July 20th and 21st! Our friends at HorrorBuzz.com will be joining us for the first show with giveaways and surprises!
High-ranking on the list of “The less you know about it going in, the better…” films, Audition first hints at being a romantic comedy-drama as it follows Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), a father of one who decides to start dating again after a period of mourning following the death of his wife. Aided by a film-producer friend (Jun Kunimura), Aoyama stages auditions for actresses for a fake film production, essentially creating his own dating service. When Aoyama becomes intrigued by the withdrawn, gorgeous Asami (Eihi Shiina), they begin a relationship; however, it’s not long before he begins to realize that Asami isn’t as reserved as she appears to be, as the audience is given insight into Asami’s bitter past – and unnerving present.
Directed by Takasi Miike. 1999. Rated R. Presented in Japanese, with English subtitles.
