This month’s Volunteer of the Month programming pick is Black Dynamite, in celebration of the hilarious cult classic’s 10th Anniversary! Director Scott Sanders’ detailed parody of the blaxploitation flicks of the 1970’s goes a step further than corny one-liners, playing out as a legitimate film released right in the middle of the genre’s heyday, with enriching details such as acclaimed musician Adrian Younge’s sensational score, and period-perfect costumes by Ruth E. Carter, this year’s Oscar-winner for Best Costume Design for Black Panther, and a former nominee for period epics Amistad and Malcolm X. All this, and the occasional visible boom mic, too.
Michael Jai White embodies the role of Black Dynamite, a former CIA agent and Vietnam war vet who learns that his brother has been murdered by mysterious villain The Man. When he learns that The Man is also guilty of pumping heroin into local orphanages and flooding the ghetto with tainted malt liquor, Black Dynamite becomes an unstoppable machine of vengeance, leaving a wake of beaten bodies behind him as he makes his way higher and higher up the chain of corruption.
Featuring super fly stunts, hilarious quotable dialogue, and the sort of outrageous situations and shocking revelations that defined the genre, Black Dynamite is a gift to lovers of smart comedy disguised as camp, and one of the funniest and most clever comedies of the last decade.
