CHILD’S PLAY: Friday Night Freakouts
March 3 @ 11:00 pm
Before The Bride… Before the Seed… There was only Chucky…
In 1988, director Tom Holland’s (Fright Night, Thinner) CHILD’S PLAY introduced the horror world to a new cine-slasher icon – Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif), a violent sociopathic criminal who also happens to dabble in the occult. On a snowy night, desperate to evade incarceration while being chased through a department store by police, Charles grabs the closest object he can – a child-sized, grinning, Cabbage Patch-like Good Guy Doll – and attempts to transfer his soul into it. Meanwhile, young Andy (Alex Vincent) has his heart set on just one Christmas present this year…and mom Karen (Catherine Hicks) just happens to work at a department store…
Played more like a straight mystery thriller with dashes of the supernatural, as opposed to its many inevitable sequels which focused more on camp, gore, and crass comedy, Child’s Play was a surprise hit when it was released, and creepy doll Chucky an instant sensation. Alternately humorous and suspenseful, Child’s Play has emerged as one of the 80’s most solid and revered horror films, launching a franchise that would see five sequels – with a sixth, Cult of Chucky, on the way.
