Legendary British author Neil Gaiman (The Sandman, American Gods) is coming to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Thursday, March 30!  Click here for info!  In celebration of Gaiman’s visit to Orange County, The Frida Cinema is proud to present one of the most celebrated big-screen adaptations of Gaiman’s works, director Henry Selick’s (The Nightmare Before Christmas) 2009 stop-motion marvel Coraline!

A visual delight whose attention to detail and fluidity of motion revolutionized the stop-motion animation technique, ultimately earning it an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year, Coraline exhibits Gaiman’s familiar dark-fantasy dreamscapes, while providing an adventurous coming-of-age story that can be enjoyed by the whole family.  While exploring her new home, a young girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning) discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own  – except, in many ways, a better one. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever…  Desperate to return to the safety of her real home and reality, Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back.

If you have a 10-and-up who’s drawn to alt-comics, smart books, dark clothing, and general pop culture subversion, the movie will be his or her Wonderland.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe

“*****.  For all the polished electrons of the latest works from Pixar, Blue Sky or DreamWorks, Selick and Co. show that stop-motion animation still looks, moves and feels like nothing at all the computer animator’s terrabytes can mimic.” – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel
“Grade: A.This thrilling stop-motion animated adventure is a high point in [Henry] Selick’s career of creating handcrafted wonderlands of beauty blended with deep, disconcerting creepiness.” – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
