This year marks the 20th Anniversary of anime sensation Cowboy Bebop – and the folks at Funimation Films are celebrating in style with a big-screen re-release of Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (aka Cowboy Bebop: The Movie)!  Catch the film in its original Japanese soundtrack, with English subtitles, on Friday, August 17 at 2:30pm, 5:30pm, and 8:30pm; and in its award-winning English dub on Sunday, August 19 at 2:30pm and 7:30pm!

Explore the far reaches of the galaxy in this undeniably cool film that inspired a generation – and redefined anime as an indisputable art form. The Bebop crew – a band of hip intergalactic loners – makes their buck tracking down fugitives and turning them in for cold hard cash. Spike is a hero whose cool façade hides a dark and deadly past; pilot Jet is a bruiser of a brute who can’t wait to collect the next bounty; Faye Valentine is a femme fatale prone to breaking hearts and separating fools from their money; Ed is a brilliant – but weird – hacker; and Ein is a super-genius Welsh Corgi. On their own, any one of them is likely to get lost in the sprawl of space, but together, they’re they most entertaining gang of bounty hunters in the year 2071.  When they learn of a mysterious terrorist planning to destroy the human population on Mars using an unknown pathogen; the crew must work to find the villain and discover the source of the pathogen before the attack can take place.

Cowboy Bebop was an instant critical and commercial success when it first hit anime audiences in 1998, both in Japanese and international markets, and most notably in the United States where it garnered several major anime and science fiction awards, and received praise for its style, characters, story, voice acting, animation, and soundtrack. In the years since its release, critics have hailed Cowboy Bebop as a masterpiece, and frequently cite it as one of the greatest anime titles of all time. Credited with helping to introduce anime to a new wave of Western viewers in the early 2000s, Cowboy Bebop has also been labeled a gateway series for the medium as a whole.

Following in the footsteps of the series, the creators came back to make Cowboy Bebop: The Movie – Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door. Released in Japan in 2001, the film received positive reviews from mainstream and anime critics alike, and was nominated for the Online Film Critics Society Award for Best Animated Film.  Maximizing its increased budget and production facilities to employ the use of filming styles typically associated with live action films, and boasting a higher animation quality than the series, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Ranked #1 on IGN’s Top 100 Anime You Should Watch Before You Die, #1 on Anime Insider’s 50 Best Anime Ever, and #2 on Newtype USA’s Top 25 Anime Titles of All Time.”

See you soon, space cowboy.

Directed by Shinichirô Watanabe, Tensai Okamura, Hiroyuki Okiura, and Yoshiyuki Takei. 2001. 114 minutes.

“Regardless of the medium, be it live action television, film, or animation, Cowboy Bebop is simply one of the finest examples of storytelling ever created.” –DVD Talk

“The response from critics and fans may have sounded hyperbolic—the word ‘masterpiece’ was thrown around a great deal—but the praise was justified. First-time solo director Watanabe had created a gorgeous tale of morality, romance, and violence–a dark look at the lives of outlaws that’s shot like an independent film.” –The Atlantic

“One of the most popular and respected anime titles in history.” –Anime News Network
