After the international success of his action/sci-fi epic Pacific Rim, Universal Pictures gave visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro a big green light – complete with a $55 million budget and complete creative control – to return to the horror genre with his sumptuous 2015 Victorian Era ghost story, Crimson Peak

Mia Wasikowska stars as Edith, a young Victorian woman haunted by visions of her deceased mother who repeatedly appears to offer just one simple and ominous warning: “Beware of Crimson Peak.”  When Edith marries the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), she finds herself swept away to – you guess it – Crimson Peak, his remote gothic mansion in the English hills. Also living there is Lady Lucille (Jessica Chastain), Thomas’ alluring and mysterious sister.  As her mother’s apparitions are soon met with increasingly ghastly visions seemingly produced by the house itself, Edith explores the Gothic castle in the hopes of trying to solve the mysteries that seems to plaque the estate – secrets that Lady Lucille seems hellbent on keeping silent.

A meticulously designed period film featuring fantastic performances by an invested cast, particularly Chastain in a role that recalls the most vampish of Hammer House of Horror femme fatales, Crimson Peak is a gorgeous and romantic thriller that begs the question that is paramount to all of del Toro’s works – what happens when the real monsters aren’t the spooky creatures staring at us from the corner, but the human standing right behind us?
“The real wonder is the sumptuous production design by Thomas E. Sanders, whose darkly colorful sets were inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.” – J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

“Guillermo del Toro’s latest dive into the darkness is a sumptuous, beautifully constructed tale that feels both archaic and inviting.” – Jason Gorber, Globe and Mail

“An enthusiastic celebration of gothic ghost stories, Crimson Peak is made with the irrepressible visual flair we’ve come to expect from the Mexican film-maker Guillermo Del Toro, and very nicely performed by a well-chosen cast.” – Matthew Bond, The Mail on Sunday (UK)
