Here, we’ll settle the debate for you, okay?  Take it from The Frida Cinema, and countless of fellow repertory houses across America who program it for you every December — YES, Die Hard is a Christmas movie!!

If you took a shot of whiskey for every Christmas reference offered by Die Hard (Ho Ho Ho Now I Have A Machine Gun, the music, the decorations…), you’d be hammered by the time Bruce Willis’ New York cop John McClane first catches on that all is not well at his ex-wife’s L.A. company Christmas party.  Seems a group of terrorists (or are they?) have crashed the high-rise festivities, heavily armed and led by suave Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), and they have no intention to let anyone leave the building alive. What’s a gung-ho, John Wayne-quoting lone gunman to do?

Featuring memorable performances by Reginald VelJohnson as McClane’s wrong-place-at-the-wrong-time partner Sgt. Al Powell, Bonnie Bedelia as McClane’s resourceful ex-wife Holly (HOLLY, “Christmas movie” doubters…), and Hart Bochner as sniveling ultra-80’s corporate douchebag Harry Ellis, Die Hard is just about as perfect an action movie as the 80’s had to offer, launching the careers of Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, and setting the bar high for many an inferior lone-hero ripoff to come.

“There are good performances from everyone in this long, often funny, very violent and exciting melodrama.” – Chris Chase, New York Daily News

“Die Hard is an action picture with a capital A. In fact, you might as well go ahead and capitalize the whole darn word.” – Jay Boyar, Orlando Sentinel

“Die Hard is as high tech, rock hard and souped up as an action film can be.” –  Variety Staff
