Newly remastered in 4K and re-released by American Genre Film Archive, both the 2001 theatrical release and the 2014 extended Director’s Cut of writer-director Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko are returning to cinemas – and we’ll be presenting both this January at The Frida!  Showtimes below.

Part-mind-bending metaphysical time travel murder mystery, part time capsule, Richard Kelly’s 2001 masterpiece Donnie Darko is an undeniable cult hit. Full of dark, dissonant humor, twistings of space-time continua, and even a couple of surreal dance numbers (don’t doubt The Frida’s commitment to Sparkle Motion…), Donnie Darko shocked audiences with its grunge-Lynchian skewering of suburbia.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Donnie, a somewhat unhappy young man who finds himself at ideological odds with his family, and even most of the town he calls home. When Donnie finds himself lost in recurring visions of a mysterious, manipulative giant bunny, he finds himself committing increasingly violent acts as commanded by his furry new friend – all while handling the pressures of high school, teenage love, and some strange metaphysical goings-on…
