DOUBT, adapted from John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play Doubt: A Parable and directred by Shanley himself, finds a crew of veteran actors at the peak of their craft. In an incredible achievement, all four of the main actors – Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Viola Davis and of course, Streep herself – were nominated for Academy Awards.

In Bronx Catholic Church in the mid-1960s, Father Flynn (Hoffman) delivers a stirring sermon on the subject of Doubt. The perceptive and pious Sister Beauvier (Streep), senses something unsavory – particularly given his questionable relationship with a shy young student. Why “Doubt?” Why now? As gossip is cast to the bitter winter winds, eyes become more watchful.

Doubt is a knot of pain, denial, shame, and abuses of power. However, what makes this film truly a masterpiece, aside from the milestone performances, is its impeccable presentation. When a film manages to present such ugliness in a manner this beautiful, what emerges is an unforgettable cinematic experience.

“Doubt asks hard questions, and we dutifully squirm in reply.” – Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

“Doubt is a commendable rendering of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

“Meryl Streep is frighteningly good as Sister Aloysius, the fire-breathing principal of a 1964 Bronx parochial school in John Patrick Shanley’s powerful but stagy Doubt.” – Lou Lumenick, New York Post
