The Frida Cinema’s month-long celebration of director Tim Burton would not be complete without one of his most personal and critically acclaimed films, Edward Scissorhands.

Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest) makes a living selling beauty products door-to-door, and finds herself at the doorsteps of a gothic mansion on the outskirts of her suburban neighborhood. There, she discovers a young man named Edward (Johnny Depp) living alone with scissor blades where his hands should be. Edward is brought into Peg’s community, where he finds himself smitten with Peg’s daughter Kim (Winona Ryder) and embraced by the neighbors – but their affections soon begin to turn after Edward is falsely accused of a crime.

Almost 30 years since the film’s release, Edward Scissorhands still connects with audiences due to its innovative portrayal of isolation and suburban angst. As the first of many film collaborations between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, Edward Scissorhands is a must-see 90’s classic, and an essential in any Tim Burton cinematic retrospective.

“Enchantment on the cutting edge, a dark yet heartfelt portrait of the artist as a young mannequin.” – Rita Kempley, The Washington Post

“Yet I loved the film simply for the character of Edward, who is Burton’s purest achievement as a director so far.” – Owen Gleiberman. Entertainment Weekly
