Our Weekend Family Matinee series continues with director Wes Anderson’s 2009 stop-motion gem Fantastic Mr. Fox!

Based on the beloved story by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory creator Roald Dahl, this is the tale of wily Mr. Fox (George Clooney), who made a name for himself as a skilled raider of chicken coops, but chose to settle down after he married Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep) and start a family.  Years later, Mr. Fox is a newspaper columnist living a modest life with his wife and son (Jason Schwartzman) – seemingly content, but stifling an urge to go back to his young days as a rascally vandal.  When Mr. Fox moves his family to a fancy tree house overlooking the farms of the ruthless farmer trio of Boggis, Bunce, and Bean, he just can’t resist getting up to some of his old chicken-poaching mischief, defying his lawyer’s advise (Bill Murray) while leaving his family in the dark.  Problem is, these farmers don’t take lightly to Mr. Fox’s mischief, and launch a swift retaliatory war.

Boasting an excellent all-start voice cast, intricate hand-built model sets, and Anderson’s signature vivid color palette and excellent soundtrack, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a feat of artistry and entertainment that ranks among the auteur’s best – animated or otherwise.

“Fantastic Mr. Fox, which Mr. Anderson wrote with Noah Baumbach, and which he has been hoping to make for many years, is in some ways his most fully realized and satisfying film.” – A.O. Scott, New York Times

★★★½.  Children, especially, will find things they don’t understand, and things that scare them. Excellent. A good story for children should suggest a hidden dimension, and that dimension of course is the lifetime still ahead of them.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

★★★★.  Wes Anderson’s utterly charming Fantastic Mr. Fox is that rarity: a children’s movie for all.” – Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times
