The manga hit that became an anime sensation is now the live feature film that took Japan by storm last summer, emerging as the country’s top-grossing live-action summer film, smashing popular film franchises before exploding across Asia before breaking records as China’s widest Japanese release on over, 8,000 screens!  The Frida Cinema presents three special screenings of Gintama on January 20 and 21, as widely popular the Samurai action/comedy film finally makes it way to the U.S.!

Based on the best-selling action comedy manga by Hideaki Sorachi, Gintama takes place in an alternate Edo-period Japan, where an Alien race has taken control and forced Samurai to lay down their swords. Once feared as the “White Demon,” former samurai Gintoki Sakata now works as an everyday handyman–until a master swordsman tasks Gintoki and his friends with finding the cursed sword Benizakura, in fear that it might fall into the wrong hands. Packed with the sword-swinging sci-fi action and offbeat humor that made the manga a classic, Gintama is bound to delight both fans and anyone looking for a journey to a visually-stunning universe where fantasy and eye-popping action lurk just around every corner.

These screenings will be presented in their original Japanese language, with English subtitles.
