(see what we did there??)

Written and directed by Ramis, Groundhog Day stars Bill Murray as Phil Connors, an arrogant and irritable Pittsburgh TV weatherman who begrudgingly takes an assignment to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  Accompanied by show producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott), Phil hopes to get this gig over with as fast as possible and go back to the big city  –  an aim that is soon dashed when he finds himself waking up on the same morning of the same day, over and over again.

Rising to sounds of Sonny & Cher’s “I Got Your Babe” and being greeted by the same people in the same way in a seemingly inescapable time loop, Phil soon finds several ways of taking this to his advantage – first to woo Rita by finding out as much as he can about her interests and mold himself into the man of her dreams, and then ultimately, to help and inspire the people around him, and if only for a day, make their lives better.  As the film and the laughs progress, Groundhog Day emerges as a wonderfully insightful and inspiring film, leaving many an audience member wondering what they would do if they could do it all over again.

In 2006, Groundhog Day was deemed worthy of preservation and added to the United States National Film Registry, as being deemed a “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” film.  Groundhog Day also won Best Screenplay awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and London Critics Circle Awards, and was awarded the Best Comedy Film award by the British Comedy Awards.
