KRAMER VS. KRAMER: Meryl Streep
February 3 @ 7:30 pm
Wednesday, February 8, 5:30 PM
Director Robert Benton’s 1979 classic KRAMER VS. KRAMER took home five Academy Awards – including the first of Meryl Streep’s three Oscar wins, for Best Supporting Actress – for its intense, unflinching depiction of a couple’s divorce, and the impact on everyone related to the case, especially the couple’s young son Billy. The legendary film represents a massive cultural shift in the United States with regard to gender roles, specifically in relation to parenting.
The film was praised for its objectivity, humanity, and willingness to depict and address difficult issues at a tense time in American history. And interesting factoid: stunningly, Streep almost didn’t land her award-winning role, as it was first offered to Charlie’s Angels actress Kate Jackson, who was ultimately unable to commit to the role.
“What Benton achieved with his screenplay he intensified with his direction. Each performance is a minor miracle of perfection – not only Hoffman’s and Streep’s, which dominate the picture, but each of the supporting roles as well.” – Arthur Knight, Hollywood Reporter
“Kramer Vs. Kramer is a perceptive, touching, intelligent film about one of the raw sores of contemporary America, the dissolution of the family unit.” – Dale Pollock, Variety
“Benton gives his film its depth and complexity by challenging the audience’s preconceptions and snap opinions at every turn.” – Frank Rich, Time Magazine
