Celebrate the lives of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds as as Meryl Streep stars in Fisher’s semi-autobiographical POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE. Written by Fisher herself, director Mike Nichols’ 1990 classic finds Streep playing Suzanne Vale, a recovering addict trying to kick a rather nasty cocaine-acid-Percodan habit while trying to revive her flat-lined acting career. Not wanting to remain in rehab, her only choice to remain on her studio’s insurance is to live with an individual deemed “responsible” enough to keep an eye on her. Who does the studio select? Suzanne’s overbearing, self-centered mother Doris (Shirley MacLaine), who Suzanne worked for years to escape after growing up in her shadow.
“In this era of postverbal cinema, Postcards proves that movie dialogue can still carry the sting, heft and meaning of the finest old romantic comedy.” – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine
“Fisher’s intelligence and humor turn what might have been movie brat indulgence into something much sharper and involving.” – Derek Adams, Time Out
“Streep gives the most fully articulated comic performance of her career, the one she’s always hinted at and made us hope for.” – Hal Hinson, Washington Post
