One of the most subversively elegant and stylish of horror films to come out of the 1960’s Hollywood studio system, Roman Polanski’s 1968 chiller Rosemary’s Baby returns to The Frida Cinema as part of our October 2017 lineup of cinematic terrors.
Based on the bestselling novel by Ira Levin, Rosemary’s Baby stars Mia Farrow plays Rosemary, a waifish young wife who moves into a New York apartment building with her husband, struggling actor Guy (John Cassavetes). Ignoring some interesting dark history about the building provided to them by their friend, Rosemary and Guy are just starting to settle down when tragedy strikes the building, followed shortly after by a visit from their odd neighbors Roman (Sidney Blackmer) and Minnie Castavet (Ruth Gordon, in her Academy Award-winning performance). After Guy spends some alone time with the neighbors, things start to get increasingly sinister for Rosemary – but is she just paranoid? Everyone around her seems to suggest so, even after she becomes pregnant after experiencing quite an intense nightmare…
A masterpiece of sight and sound, highlighted by iconic performances by Farrow, Cassavetes, and Gordon, Rosemary’s Baby is so much more than a great horror film. It’s a masterpiece in its own right, a peerless and perfect marriage of auteur and genre cinema, unimaginable under anyone else’s direction and vision but Polanski’s.
We are excited to once again present Rosemary’s Baby on Paramount Picture’s striking 4K DCP Restoration.
