From visionary filmmaker Zhang Yimou, director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, comes China’s latest wuxia epic Shadow.

Set during the Three Kingdoms period of China, Shadow (Ying) stars Deng Chao in an astonishing dual performance as both Commander Yu, and his body double Jing. Yu intends to use Jing against the Pei’s king (Zheng Kai) in order to protect them from invaders by circumventing the king’s doomed efforts to negotiate peace.  Complicating matters is Yu’s wife (Sun Li) who must uphold the deceit of her husband. With every dripping cloud and corner of pooling darkness, Shadow is an action-packed period piece saturated with style—a stunning operatic movie that is elevated to art by virtue of its graceful martial arts and indulgently gorgeous visuals.

Told with a stunning visual style that transforms the screen into a canvas as Yimou draws inspiration from the ink and wash paintings of Chinese tradition, Shadow explores light and darkness both visually and metaphorically as it examines themes of duality and deceit.  With every dripping cloud and corner of pooling darkness, Shadow is an action-packed period piece saturated with style—a stunning operatic movie that is elevated to art by virtue of its graceful martial arts and indulgently gorgeous visuals.  Nominated for over 30 international awards, Shadow has already won 12, including the Asian Film Awards for Best Cinematographer (Xiaoding Zhao), Best Costume Designer (Minzheng Chen), Best Production Designer (Horace Ma), and Best Sound (Jiang Yang, Nan Zhao); and the Golden Horse Film Festival awards for Best Visual Effects (Samson Sing, Wun Wong), Best Art Direction (Horace Ma), Best Makeup & Costume Design (Minzheng Chen), and Best Director of the Year.

“Shadow is a sumptuous sensory feast filled with spectacle, surprise, and madness.”
— Filipe Freitas, Film Threat

“Every supremely controlled stylistic element of Zhang Yimou’s breathtakingly beautiful ‘Shadow’ is an echo of another, a motif repeated, a pattern recurring in a fractionally different way each time.” — Jessica Kiang, Variety

“Beautiful to look at, with amazing stuntwork, complicated characters, and a story that constantly twists and turns, this is a film that hopefully signals that Zhang Yimou is back to making films of layered complexity and visual splendor.” — Leigh Monson, Birth.Movies.Death
