Voted the Greatest Film Performance by an Actress by Premiere Magazine and several other ranking lists, Meryl’s Streep’s legendary, unforgettable embodiment of Sophie Zawistowski in Alan J. Pakula’s SOPHIE’S CHOICE is nothing short of remarkable – and absolutely heartbreaking.

Based on the novel by William Styron, Sophie’s Choice is at heart the story of Stingo, a naive and sweet-natured young American writer who arrives in New York City to launch his career.  Staying at a boarding house, he soon befriends his passionate neighbors – Nathan (Kevin Kline), a manic and temperamental bon vivant who is obsessed with the Holocaust, and his lover Sophie, a concentration camp survivor bound at the hip to Nathan, with whom she feels she has a deep understanding.  The three embark on a friendship brimming with art, music, and bohemian adventures, until their happiness is endangered by both Nathan’s temperament, and the deep wounds of Sophie’s past she has been unable to grapple with.

“So perfectly cast and well-imagined that it just takes over and happens to you. It’s quite an experience.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-

Though it’s far from a flawless movie, Sophie’s Choice is a unified and deeply affecting one. Thanks in large part to Miss Streep’s bravura performance, it’s a film that casts a powerful, uninterrupted spell. – Janet Maslin, New York Times

“The way Streep inhabits Sophie, and brings her history to life whether she’s explicitly talking about the past or carrying herself across the room with wounded grace, can’t help but make parts of the rest of the film seem smaller by comparison..” – Keith Phipps, The Dissolve
