Johnny Depp took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor, as well as scored an Oscar nomination, for his towering performance as Benjamin Barker, a mild-mannered barber who is unjustly sent to prison after he is framed by the evil Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) as part of a scheme to steal Barker’s lovely wife for himself.  Fifteen years later, and under the new name Sweeney Todd, Barker returns to the streets of London for revenge, applying his razor to unlucky customers – and, with the help of his landlady and local baker Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), disposing of the evidence in a manner that suits both their interests.

A mesmerizing, macabre, and darkly comical kaleidoscope of fantastic performances, Tony and Olivier Award-winning songs, and Grand Guignol gore, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a work-of-art that’s hard to imagine in another director’s hands.

Saturday, October 20 – 8pm

“It’s strangely beautiful and beautifully strange, with horrific subject matter that produces plenty of wicked humor, and characters who initially seem ghoulish but ultimately reveal themselves as sympathetic and deeply sad.” – Christy Lemire, Associated Press

“This represents one happy instance of a film made by a director without stage experience that genuinely serves the intentions of the original piece.” – Todd McCarthy Variety December 4, 2007

“Sweeney Todd is a thriller-diller from start to finish: scary, monstrously funny, and melodically thrilling. And Depp is simply stupendous.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
