Our celebration of women-directed horror films continues with The Babadook. Directed by Jennifer Kent, her directorial debut follows a struggling widowed mother being driven mad by a monster from what appears to be a children’s pop-up book.

Six years after the death of her husband, Amelia Vanak (Essie Davis) raises her son Sam (Noah Wiseman) by herself. Her troubles multiply after Sam becomes convinced an imaginary monster, The Babadook, is haunting him. After countless sleepless nights dealing with Sam, Amelia begins noticing strange events occurring and begins to wonder if her son may have been right all along.

This sleeper hit became one of the most acclaimed films of 2014. In the years since, The Babadook has become a symbol for grief, trauma, and an unexpected LGBT icon.
