THE BABADOOK: Friday Night Freakouts
February 17 @ 11:00 pm
In honor of the four female filmmakers behind new horror anthology XX, opening February 17 at The Frida Cinema, we are proud to once again give the big-screen treatment to director Jennifer Kent’s critically-acclaimed – and utterly terrifying – 2014 masterpiece THE BABADOOK!
A feature film expansion adapted from Kent’s award winning short “Monster,” The Babadook follows widowed wife Amelia (Essie Davis), whose husband was tragically killed in a car crash while rushing her to the hospital to deliver their newborn son. Six years later Amelia finds herself struggling to discipline her troubled son, Samuel, whose dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill both of them.
When a disturbing storybook called “The Babadook” turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the title character is the creature he’s been dreaming about. As his hallucinations begin to spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent, forcing a concerned and exhausted Amelia to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real…
Combing elements of classic horror films such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu, while still rivaling modern classics like The Conjuring and Insidious in delivering genuine chills and frights, The Babadook is a film that is bold, well-crafted, and excitingly original.

“*****. One of the strongest, most effective horror films of recent years — with awards-quality lead work from Essie Davis, and a brilliantly designed new monster who could well become the break-out spook archetype of the decade.” – Kim Newman, Empire
“*****. There goes your peaceful night’s sleep.” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out NY
“The Babadook is a smart, respectful horror that puts character and emotional issues first, yet never at the cost of a delightful and haunting fright.” – Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist
“Kent and editor Simon Njoo show maturity and trust in their material, expertly building tension through the insidious modulation from naturalistic dysfunctional family drama to all-out boogeyman terror.” – David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
