It’s not Halloween season without a classic werewolf movie – and this year, we’re bringing you Joe Dante’s brilliant, game-changing 1981 classic, The Howling!

Dee Wallace (Cujo, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial) stars as Karen White, a Los Angeles television journalist who suffers a terrifying ordeal while aiding police in apprehending a serial killer, a traumatic experience which results in the loss of her memory. At her doctor’s recommendation, Karen and her husband travel to an isolated psychiatric retreat called The Colony, led by Dr. George Waggner (Patrick Macnee), in the hopes that Karen might regain her memory and begin to heal.  Meanwhile, Karen’s colleague Chris (Dennis Dugan) investigates the bizarre circumstances surrounding her shock  – and soon discovers a dark secret that threatens to be revealed under the light of the full moon…

“Director Joe Dante’s work reflects Alfred Hitchcock’s insistence that terror and suspense work best when counterbalances by a chuckle or two.” Variety

“The Howling pays enthusiastic scenic homage to B-movies while remaining faithful to the exploitation formula of the genre.” — The Globe and Mail

“Yes, Rick Baker won the Oscar a year down the line for his American Werewolf in London FX – and, yes, they are staggering. But it is Rob Bottin’s work here (with inflatable air bags under latex ‘skin’ and a pioneering ‘hydraulic snout’) that is — and ever shall be — the pinnacle of mutation effects. Amen.” Empire
