Get ready to take the red pill – 1999 sci-fi classic The Matrix kicks off a month of 20th Anniversary Screenings at The Frida!

Set in the 22nd century, the film tells the story of a computer hacker (Keanu Reeves) who joins a group of underground insurgents fighting the vast and powerful computers who now rule the earth. As he delves into his training, Neo discovers mind-blowing truths about not only the world surrounding him but himself as well.

A smash hit upon its initial release, The Matrix was considered groundbreaking at the time for its philosophical overtones and groundbreaking special effects. Indeed, many movies have tried to replicate its now-classic slow-mo action sequences, but few come close to the original.

1999. Directed by The Wachowskis. 136 minutes. Rated R.

Wednesday, January 2nd – 2pm, 5pm, 8pm
Thursday, January 3rd – 2:30pm, 5:30pm, 8:30pm
Saturday, January 5th – 8pm

“A technologically stunning movie that furthers the genre and features crowd-pleasing performances to go with the frequent scenes of gunplay and violence.” — David Hunter, Hollywood Reporter

“Where other films are done in by the freedom offered by computer effects, The Matrix integrates them beautifully.” — Keith Phipps, A.V. Club

“Hang on tight for a real mind-blower, with astonishing visual effects, frightening monsters and exciting stunt fights.” — Tom Sander, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
