VALHALLA RISING: The Films of Nicolas Winding Refn

April 19, 2018 @ 4:30 pm

This month’s The Directors series features the stylish, intense, polarizing, and unapologetically auteur films of Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn . On April 17th, 18th, and 19th, join us for his visually stunning, and brutally beautiful, 2010 death metal-fueled medieval odyssey Valhalla Rising.

For years, the mysterious One Eye (Mads Mikkelsen) has been forced to fight in brutal combat for the entertainment of his evil captors, never once falling to defeat. Alone and scarred, his only friend is a young boy who brings him food and water. However, after escaping his imprisonment on a Viking ship, One Eye soon discovers there are even worse evils outside of his cage. After he and his new companions discover another civilization filled with terrible cruelty, One Eye finds the inspiration to atone for his past acts of brutality, and risk being an avenger for humanity and righteousness.

This ruthless, one of a kind tale takes audiences you on a violent, hallucinatory journey through 11th-century Scandinavia, fog-drenched seas, and a harsh and often nightmarish New World.

“Like a John Milius film reduced to its pure, masculine essence, and shot through one of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s lens filters.” – Scott Tobias, AV Club

“The breathtaking digital photography and an atmospheric electronic score sustain the mood, and for those who see this savage journey through to the end, there are riches aplenty.” – Nigel Floyd, Time Out

“It feels like a Black Sabbath song come to visual life.” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out
