Our January retrospective of some of the earlier works by Oscar-winning Roma director Alfonso Cuarón continues with his groundbreaking 2001 Mexican classic, the smarter-than-your-average-teen-sex-comedy Y Tu Mamá También.

Winner of over 35 intentional film awards, and an Academy Award nominee Best Foreign Language Film, Cuarón’s funny, touching, steamy, and remarkably intelligent road trip comedy-drama finds teenage boys Julio (Gael García Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna) dealing with the raging hormones, intense friendships, and a headlong rush into adulthood that comes with being seventeen. Over the course of a summer, the two best friends embark on a carefree cross-country escapade with older woman Luisa (Maribel Verdú), who they are both attracted to – and who has a secret motivation of her own.  Along the way, the trio find new and challenging connections with each other, themselves, and the changing face of Mexico around them.

Directed by Alfonso Cuarón | 2001 | 106 minutes | Rated R | Presented in Spanish with English subtitles

“The movie has an emotional kick that lingers like a primal memory. When the year is over, Cuaron’s film will be remembered as one of 2002’s finest.” – David Ansen, Newsweek

“Rating: 4/4.  That rare thing – a Hollywood teen flick transfigured into something like pubescent scripture: In the beginning, there was lust; in the end, there is knowledge.” – Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer

“Fast, funny, unafraid of sexuality — and finally, devastating.” – Elvis Mitchell, New York Times
