THE LURE

March 24 - March 30
The Frida Cinema, 305 E. 4th Street
Santa Ana, CA 90271 United States

In the bold, genre-defying horror-musical mashup The Lure — the playful and confident debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska — a pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters are drawn ashore in an alternate '80s Poland to explore the wonders and temptations of life on land. Their tantalizing siren songs and otherworldly aura make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers in the half-glam, half-decrepit fantasy world of Smoczynska's imagining. In a visceral twist on Hans Christian Andersen's original Little Mermaid tale, one sister falls for a human, and as the bonds of sisterhood are tested, the lines between love and survival get blurred. A savage coming-of-age fairytale with a catchy new-wave soundtrack, lavishly grimy sets, and outrageous musical numbers, The Lure explores its themes of sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with energy and originality.

MULTIPLE MANIACS: 4K Restoration

March 25 @ 11:00 pm
The Frida Cinema, 305 E. 4th Street
Santa Ana, CA 90271 United States

John Waters’ gloriously grotesque, unavailable-for-decades second feature MULTIPLE MANIACS comes to theaters at long last, replete with all manner of depravity, from robbery to murder to one of cinema’s most memorably blasphemous, not-for-all-stomachs moments! And thanks to the folks at Janus Films, this landmark 1970 film is getting a gorgeous 4K transfer and Criterion home-video release - and two opportunities to be seen on the big screen at The Frida Cinema!

Made on a shoestring budget in Baltimore, with Waters taking on nearly every technical task, this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the Cavalcade of Perversion, a traveling show put on by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine!, who’s out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair. Starring Waters’ beloved regular cast the Dreamlanders - including David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, Edith Massey, and Cookie Mueller - Multiple Maniacs is an anarchist masterwork from an artist who has doggedly tested the limits of taste for decades.
