PERSONAL SHOPPER

March 31 - April 6
The Frida Cinema, 305 E. 4th Street
Santa Ana, CA 90271 United States

A mesmerizing drama/ghost story that took home the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Olivier Assayas' PERSONAL SHOPPER comes to The Frida for a one-week engagement Friday, March 31 - Thursday, April 6.

Kristen Stewart, once again working with Assayas after her multiple-award-winning turn in his Clouds of Sils Maria, plays Maureen, a young American who navigates the fashion underworld in Paris as part of her stint as a personal shopper for a celebrity. In grief over the recent death of her twin brother, with whom she shared the ability to communicate with spirits, Maureen returns to their home in Paris in the hopes of connecting with him. Soon, she starts to receive ambiguous messages from an unknown source...

“It works in two realms - as an engrossing ghost story, and a drama that addresses profound matters of life and death.” - Washington Post

CORALINE

March 31 @ 8:00 pm
The Frida Cinema, 305 E. 4th Street
Santa Ana, CA 90271 United States

A visual delight whose attention to detail and fluidity of motion revolutionized the stop-motion animation technique, ultimately earning it an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year, Coraline exhibits Gaiman's familiar dark-fantasy dreamscapes, while providing an adventurous coming-of-age story that can be enjoyed by the whole family. While exploring her new home, a young girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning) discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own - except, in many ways, a better one. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever... Desperate to return to the safety of her real home and reality, Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back.

DONNIE DARKO: Friday Night Freakouts

March 31 @ 11:00 pm
The Frida Cinema, 305 E. 4th Street
Santa Ana, CA 90271 United States

The Frida Cinema presents director René Laloux's legendarily trippy 1973 animated classic FANTASTIC PLANET. The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). After Terr, kept as a pet since infancy, escapes from his gigantic child captor, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence.

Nothing else has ever looked or felt like Laloux’s animated marvel, a politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction. With its eerie, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor; brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer; and wondrous creatures and landscapes, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence.
