FREE SCREENING of John Carpenter’s ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK – on our 4th Birthday, as voted on by YOU! February 21st, 7:30pm!

The people have spoken!
Escape from New York is our 4th Birthday Screening!

Last week we launched a poll to find out which of two Remasters you’d rather see at The Frida Cinema on Wednesday, February 21st, in celebration of our 4th Birthday: Mike Nichols’ The Graduate, or John Carpenter’s Escape from New York.  After almost 200 votes, the champion is clear: Escape from New York wins with 72.9% of the vote!

We’ll be presenting Rialto Pictures’ gorgeous new 2K Restoration of the 1981 classic, the second of five collaborations between director John Carpenter and star Kurt Russell (along with Elvis, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and Escape from L.A.).  In the dark dystopian future year of 1997, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant maximum security prison, surrounded by a 50-foot containment wall and patrolled by armed helicopters. When Air Force One is hijacked and crashes into the island, the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence) is taken hostage by a group of inmates. Gruff man-of-action Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, is recruited to save the Commander in Chief in exchange for his freedom — but can you really trust a man who injected his neck with micro-explosives?

An action-packed thriller that co-stars 70s genre icons such as Pam Grier, Ernest Borgnine, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau, Lee Van Cleef, and Harry Dean Stanton, Escape from New York has all the makings of a cult classic – an impossibly macho hero, infinitely quotable one-liners, over-the-top violence, and an ultra-80s synth score by Carpenter himself!

Free Screening!   Please RSVP to let us know you’ll be joining us – space is limited, and we’ll prioritize seating for those who’ve RSVP’d!
