This month, The Frida Cinema has been honoring the works of iconic and highly-influencial Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, with a retrospective of six of his most acclaimed films. Five of these –Seven Samurai, Ikiru, The Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, and Rashomon – were written or co-written by Shinobu Hashimoto, one of Japan’s most prolific screenwriters who wrote over 70 films in a 50+ year career.
Mr. Hashimoto passed away yesterday at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy of cinema we are privileged to honor and celebrate. We dedicate our upcoming screenings of the last remaining film in our Kurosawa tribute – Rashomon, screening July 23, 24, and 29 – to Shinobu Hashimoto, in gratitude for the fantastic stories, rich characters, and grand adventures he provided to generations of film lovers.
