August’s Volunteer of the Month programming pick comes the wonderful Dina Bdaiwi, who has chosen to program the critically-acclaimed romantic-comedy (500) Days of Summer, starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt!
Tom (Gordon-Levitt) is an aspiring architect who currently earns his living as a greeting card writer. Summer (Deschanel) enters his life when she takes a job as a secretary for Tom’s boss. After bonding over a shared love of The Smiths, Tom falls hard for Summer, believing she’s his soulmate; the problem is, Summer doesn’t believe in love, and certainly doesn’t believe in the concept of soulmates. The two begin a casual fling as Tom finds ways to prove to her not only that true love is real, but that they’ve both found it in each other.
A clever, offbeat film that plays with both audience expectations and traditional film conventions, (500) Days of Summer is an effective romantic comedy that transcends the genre by being refreshingly honest and genuinely charming.
Directed by Marc Webb. 2009. 95 mins. PG-13.
