Before he became a wisecracking slasher shooting out memorable one-liners in one sequel after another, Freddy Krueger scared audiences audiences out of their wits in Wes Craven’s classic 1984 horror film, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

In idyllic small town America, a group of teens find that they are all having horrific nightmares about the same mysterious figure, a disfigured man in a striped sweater, dusty hat, and knives protruding from his fingers.  When they realize that being slain by him in their dreams means dying in real life, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) and her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) endeavor to do anything they can to stay awake long enough to figure out why this man is after them, as well as a way to trap and destroy him.

A seminal slasher film, A Nightmare on Elm Street was a sleeper hit that terrified audiences upon its release, earning the immediate word-of-mouth, must-see praise that could only result in a sequel – or in Elm Street’s, case seven sequels, a television show, a remake, and a massively popular Halloween costume.
