Based on the first novel of Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman as Lena, a biologist and former army soldier whose husband has disappeared while on a classified military ops mission.
When he miraculously returns after a year, but dying of a mysterious illness, Lena discovers he was inside Area X—a sinister and secret area off the coast where an inexpiable phenomenon dubbed “the shimmer” is expanding and seemingly overtaking everything in its path. Though no one has ever returned, Lena decides to join the next expedition team, a group of female scientists, in order to learn what is happening to her husband. Once inside of the shimmer, they discover a world of mutated creatures and a landscape as dangerous as it is beautiful, one that threatens both their lives and their sanity.
Written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later), the 2018 sci-fi thriller, Annihilation, is a mind-bending and imaginative feature to be enjoyed at The Frida Cinema this April!
