Tom Hooper’s hilariously bizarre musical Cats is crawling back for another participatory screening this Frida After Dark!
In the moonlit streets of London, a tribe of felines known as the “Jellicle Cats” gather together to perform in the annual Jellicle Ball, where one cat will be chosen to be reborn into a new life. A newly abandoned kitten named Victoria (Francesca Hayward) begins to learn the mystic ways of the Jellicles in the form of song. Before long, the festivities are disrupted by the evil crime cat McCavity (Idris Elba), who seeks to become the Jellicle Choice through dastardly means.
Infamous even before its release, Cats is a fresh new addition to the midnight movie sub-genre.
“A feverish and cacophonic dream that intermittently licks your senses but it always scratches your brain.” – Nestor Bentancor, Cine Desde Hollywood
“… I came to find the sincere theater-kid energy of the project oddly charming […] the film has a hypnotic effect that’s difficult to explain, except to say that the whole thing is so aggressively chipper and earnest that one can’t shoo it away […] Whether you think the imagery is beautiful or nightmarish, this is a film that demands to be looked at.” – David Sims, The Atlantic
“A deranged freak-fantasia worth falling into for a couple of hours, if just to say you did. That is to say, it’s Cats.” – Isaac Feldberg, Fortune
