Audition director Takashi Miike strikes again with his newest film, the action-packed crime drama First Love!
When a duplicitous scheme by a low-level yakuza goes hilariously wrong, a terminally ill boxer and a drug-addicted call girl find themselves caught in the crosshairs of two warring gangs. Over the course of the increasingly ludicrous night, the two fall passionately in love, while a hail of bullets and blood fall quietly in the background.
Screened at the Director’s Fortnite section at Cannes, First Love is a worthy addition to Miike’s eclectic filmography as well as Japanese crime cinema in general.
“Takashi Miike swirls into his frequently sublime new gangster film, a piece of work so feral and full of life that you’d never guess it was (at least) the 90th feature its director has made in the last 30 years. Even now […] he still finds new ways to surprise.” – David Ehrlich, IndieWire
“The Tarantino-style rollercoaster ride is as effortlessly enjoyable as ever, accentuating the director’s lighter comic leanings over his bloodthirsty side.” – Stephen Dalton, The Hollywood Reporter
“First Love is the kind of film that’s designed for seen-it-all genre fans who know these tropes […] and appreciate seeing them tweaked in new directions, and treated with an air of fond familiarity rather than dour airlessness.” – Tasha Robinson, The Verge
