That “insane Russian film with the buff bear-head soldier that everyone keeps talking about but I hear it’s never coming to America” — is coming to The Frida!  Experience Guardians (Russian name: Zashchitniki) Friday, November 17 at 11pm, as our Friday Night Freakouts series brings you a truly rare opportunity to catch an international neo-cult-classic on the big screen!

Russian-Armenian filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan’s CGI-packed, blisteringly-paced action-fantasy opens during the Cold War, when an organization called Patriot creates a super-hero squad of Soviet superheroes.  The team includes representatives of the different nationalities of the Soviet Union, each one having long hid their identity.   In the present day, when the world finds itself with a major new threat, the superheroes are tracked down and assemble to form the Guardians:  Lar, who is armed with earth manipulation abilities, and is able to control and levitate rocks, dust and soil in his vicinity; Ursus, a werebear who and has the ability to transform himself into a large bear, though he can control how much of his body is transformed and can transform partially if he wills it; Khan, who is masterfully skilled with all kinds of blades, as well as with many kinds of martial arts; and Xenia,  a skilled acrobat, gymnast, and martial artist.

Panned by Russian critics, the insane Guardians nevertheless found fans in the cult and genre cinema crowd, ultimately leading to the announcement of an upcoming sequel, and the attention of our friends at Shout! Factory, who have made this screening possible!  Don’t miss it!
