Frida After Dark presents Robocop, the first entry in our Paul Verhoeven Month series!
When cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is gunned down in the line of duty, a corporation called OCP transforms him into the ultimate law enforcement officer: Robocop. Part human, part machine, Robocop’s prime directives are to eradicate crime in Detroi. But when memories of his past life invade his conscious, he sets out on an existential journey to discover his identity and get revenge on the people who killed him. Aided by his spunky partner (Nancy Allen), Robocop wages war against crime boss Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) and soon learns that things may not be as they seem.
A perfect blend of sci-fi action and biting satire, Robocop is an essential entry in Verhoeven’s directing career.
“Most thriller and special-effects movies come right off the assembly line. You can call out every development in advance, and usually be right. ‘RoboCop’ is a thriller with a difference.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
“Vile, violent, and very funny. The pace is breakneck, and when the wit does run out, way-out weaponry and whole-scale destruction keep the appalled excitement burning.” — Mark Salisbury, Time Out
“A tribute to the perspicacity and skill of director Paul Verhoeven, Robocop is capable of satisfying audiences with diverse agendas and preferences.” — James Berardinelli, ReelViews
