From The Place Beyond the Pines co-writer Darius Marder comes Sound of Metal, a beautifully-piercing and sensitive portrait of the deaf community.
One of the most widely-acclaimed films of 2020, the film focuses on Ruben (Oscar nominee Riz Ahmed), the drummer of a heavy metal/noise duo, and his partner Lou (Olivia Cooke). As Ruben suddenly begins to lose his hearing, he soon finds himself within the care of a shelter for deaf, recovering addicts. A former heroin user, Ruben slowly learns from the shelter’s leader Joe (fellow Oscar nominee Paul Raci) that he is not there to fix his hearing, but rather to adapt: to live a life experienced in stillness.
Nominated for six Academy Awards, Sound of Metal has been praised for its raw performances and distinctive sound design, allowing viewers to deeply immerse themselves into the perspective of Ruben. The film would go on to win the Oscar for Best Sound, as well as Best Film Editing.
