If you haven’t seen Sony’s 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, you may have found yourself scratching your head at its Oscar victory over big animation studios Pixar and Disney earlier this year.  If you have, no doubt you were rooting for the exceptional animated feature, and jumped out of your seat with joy when it deservedly won.   Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verseis a true gift to those who appreciate striking animation; bold and engaging storytelling with genuine heart; developed, palpable characters; and purely enjoyable, thrilling entertainment.  Based on a story by Phil Lord, the mind behind the surprisingly poignant The Lego Movie, and co-written by Lord and Rodney Rothman, Spider -Man: Into the Spider-Verse offers a fresh and utterly original vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, introducing Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, who considers himself one of Spider-Man’s biggest fans – despite the disapproval of his stern police office. While creating street art in an abandoned subway station, Miles is bitten by a radioactive spider, and soon discovers himself developing spider-like abilities, including the power to turn invisible and to emit electric venom blasts.  But what might so far sound like a familiar retelling of the Spider-Man origin story is soon turned wildly on its ear, as a mishap bends realities and finds multiple versions of Spider-Man – including Peter Parker himself – converging in an epic battle to save their city from the likes of classic villains Prowler, Scorpion, and Tombstone.

Winner of over 50 international awards, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse emerged as one of the most unexpected awards-sweepers of 2018, complementing its Academy Award with Best Animated Feature Film wins from guilds including the Golden Globes, BAFTA, Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, and the Annie Awards – essentially, the Oscars of animation – where it also took home an additional six awards: Best Directing, Best Writing, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Character Animation, and Best Character Design.

“Who’d have thought that animation could turn a whole army of interdimensional webslingers into something fresh, funny, fierce and revolutionary? With a mixed-race hero at its core, this is the greatest Spider-Man epic of them all-and the coolest.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“It’s a film that’s fantastically fresh, both visually and narratively, trippy and post-modern at the same time and packed with intriguing storytelling tools, humor, empathy and action, while also true to its roots.” – Mark Kennedy, Associated Press

“A pop-art roller coaster ride with soul, it can dazzle even a sick-of-superheroes doubter with two hours of thoroughgoing delight. Take the kids. Better yet, take the kid in yourself.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe
