WHAT’S THE MOVIE ABOUT?
The Princess Bride is Rob Reiner’s beloved and hilarious adaptation of William Goldman’s novel, a send-up of fairy tale adventure stories that nevertheless manages to be a genuinely romantic and thoroughly entertainment example of the genre. Robin Wright plays Buttercup, a beautiful young woman who has fallen love with Westley, her farm boy. Broken-hearted after Westley is captured by pirates, the shattered Buttercup agrees to marry the slimy Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) – who has devised a less-than-virtuous fate for her, in the effort of starting a war with a neighboring kingdom. To accomplish this mission, he hires a trio of mercenaries – self-proclaimed genius Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), gentle but powerful giant Fezzik (André the Giant), and Spanish pirate Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), who is on his own mission of vengeance. What they weren’t counting on was a mysterious masked “man in black” to thwart them and rescue the princess – not to mention those horrific R.O.U.S.’s and Shrieking Eels…
