The late, great Gene Wilder shines in the original 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory – coming to The Frida Cinema April 21 & 22! All shows before 3pm only $7 as part of our $7 Weekend Family Matinees series!
In director Mel Stuart’s beloved adaptation of the novel by Roald Dahl (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach), brimming with sophisticated humor to engage audiences of all ages, oddball candy maker Willy Wonka (Wilder in his iconic, Golden Globe-nominated performance) puts on a worldwide contest by hiding a mythical Golden Ticket in five of his own candy bars. Whoever manages to find one will win a coveted prize: an exclusive tour of the Wonka factory, rarely seen by the outside world, and a lifetime supply of candy. Adults and children alike tear into chocolate bars, and the tickets are ultimately discovered by five children – four of them intolerable brats, and the fifth a kind-hearted boy named Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum), who brings along his equally likable grandfather (played by Jack Albertson). The factory ends up being just as magical and full of whimsy as the world had always imagined — but in the hands of the eccentric Wonka, there are more than a few dark surprises and surreal discoveries to be made by the unsuspecting children.
