Packaged and marketed as Zombi 2 (despite not being a sequel at all, let alone to any film called Zombi), Zombie is an audacious gorefest that set the benchmark for the dominant motif of 1980s Italian horror – zombies. A scientist’s daughter journeys to a Caribbean island after her father’s boat turns up abandoned in New York City. Of course, things don’t turn out too well for her and her crew, as the dead residents of the island begin to rise up and attack the living.
Filmed in Italy, with further location shooting in New York and Santo Domingo, Zombie was produced on a small budget – which shows, though the film’s modest effects and stripped-down aesthetic don’t diminish the scares and pervasive sense of dread – and ended up earned several times its production costs back in international grosses. Upon its release in the United Kingdom, it found itself listed among the notorious “Video Nasties” – which of course, only helped establish its legacy.
