Have this article read to you, listen to it like a podcast
We are kicking off this fine and artsy programming-filled April with some very new and very independent films, such as Enys Men and Smoking Causes Coughing, as well as continuing the usual and expected trend of playing weird yet timeless gems that have graced our screens before, such as David Lynch’s debut film, Eraserhead, and our April Volunteer of the Month pick, Fantastic Planet, from our very own Yasmin Hurtado!
How did you find out about The Frida Cinema?
When I was researching movies, the name came up and I was like, “Wow, it’s crazy that there’s a movie theater around where I live and they’re playing all these movies that I want to see, I gotta check them out.” So, that’s what I did, and the rest was history after that.
What made you want to volunteer here?
I’ve always wanted to work at a movie theater, and at the time I thought volunteering would be the first step. I wanted to volunteer during the drive-ins but because of COVID, I had to wait, but now I volunteer and I get to see all the cool movies and learn about a lot of cool movies as well.
Tell us a little bit about Fantastic Planet.
Fantastic Planet is a really cool movie that I really like. Animation-wise, it’s one of the most unique I’ve ever seen, and I like planets, which are really cool. I just find the whole story with the Oms and the other creatures really fascinating, and visually it’s a very interesting movie. I highly recommend it!
What were your other choices for Volunteer Pick of the Month?
The Muppet Movie and Daisies.
What is your favorite Frida memory?
My favorite Frida memory would have to be when I went to The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a friend of mine and we had a great time, and I just love seeing the shadow cast do their thing. I fell more in love with Rocky Horror when I went to see it.
If you could program any movie here, what would you pick?
Fateful Findings by Neil Breen is definitely my first pick because that movie needs to be seen in a theater, period.
Fantastic Planet screens starting Sunday, April 2nd at The Frida Cinema.

Monday, Apr 3 – 6:45pm
