There are not many celebrities who can truly call themselves world-renowned, but Arnold Schwarzenegger sure can—he was one of the poster boys for Planet Hollywood™ in its heyday, after all. His life and career began in his homeland of Austria, growing to star status in the ’80s after moving to America, and he has since crossed many oceans and continents over his now 50-year career. A renaissance man who is known for both his brains and most definitely his rippling brawn, Arnold Schwarzenegger has done everything from fitness, to film, to politics, and my personal favorite, Japanese commercials, proving that one can truly do anything with hard work, determination, and a dream with a plan applied.

Arnold grew up as a farm boy in a small town where, as a young man, he became interested in weightlifting. As his body quickly responded to his training, Arnold’s dedication to the sport responded in tandem, and he found himself already a nationwide bodybuilding success before his twenties. An Austrian sensation, Arnold took home the title of Mr. Universe in 1967 at the age of 20, making him the youngest titleholder ever. This competition was essentially the rocket ship that would blast him to Hollywood and future stardom, as only years later he would be worlds away, having been invited to train at the world famous Gold’s Gym on Venice Beach. The rest would be Hollywood cinema history, first cutting his teeth in acting doing a dubbed role in Hercules In New York, and almost 10 years after, solidifying his role as action movie star with his breakout performance as the title character in Conan the Barbarian (1982).

“The Austrian Oak” knew he was destined for greatness and continued his road to world fame with back-to-back hits in 1984: Conan the Destroyer and The Terminator. Though Arnold recognized his potential for greatness, his success was a surprise to many in the industry, who had hitherto noted his strong European accent, imposing size, and lack of acting experience as factors that would work against him—but instead, they created a perfect storm for him to make landfall in the booming action genre of 1980s Hollywood, brimming with MMA stars like JCVD, toughs like Stallone, and dashing ones like Harrison Ford. Arnie made his mark on the action movies in a unique way, and even took it one step further, also branching out to other genres such as comedy, famously with the help of Ivan Reitman and his role in Twins (1988)—and recently, even the horror genre, with a surprise performance in the 2015 zombie drama Maggie.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Schwarzenegger was also notably governor of California 2000-2010, going by “the Governator,” and is also noted philanthropist. As a motivational speaker, the sage and worldly gentlemen is also full of primo advice and great quotes for cubicle wall-spaces. Here are some favorites:

  1. Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.
  2. In this country, it doesn’t make any difference where you were born. It doesn’t make any difference who your parents were. It doesn’t make any difference if, like me, you couldn’t even speak English until you were in your twenties.
  3. In our society, the women who break down barriers are those who ignore limits.

A career that, as of early 2019, includes over 50 roles in a film, countless commercial promos, a political career, and even great humanitarian efforts with his camps and charities, Arnold has been one of the busiest and hardest working men in Hollywood, as well as one of the highest paid. Fair, seeing as how all of his associated films have brought mega dollars to the industry, grossing $1.7 billion within the U.S. and over $4 billion worldwide. He is still kicking butts and taking hits at the age of 71, and continuing to star in Hollywood blockbuster flicks like the upcoming 2019 release, Terminator: Dark Fate, wherein he reprises his famous role with director, Tim Miller (Deadpool).
