Join Segerstrom Center for the Arts every Thursday this August for Segerstrom at The Frida! Featuring five movies by directors as diverse as Robert Zemeckis and Ang Lee, the films here have also been adapated from or into stage productions that can be seen at Segerstrom this coming year. Whether it’s a musical comedy or adventure-drama, there’s something for everyone and all ages in this month-long series. Mrs. Doubtfire

Mrs. Doubtfire – August 1st, 7:30pm
Directed by Chris Columbus | 1993

Robin Williams’ plays Daniel Hillard, a loving father whose childish eccentricities lead his wife, Miranda (Sally Field), to file for a divorce. Heartbroken to find his time with his children limited by the courts, Daniel hatches an elaborate plan to dress as an older British woman and convinces Miranda to hire him as a nanny. As Mrs. Doubtfire, Daniel is able to win over the children, as well as learn a few valuable lessons in parenting — but how long can he keep the ruse up the more he has to switch between his two personas?

Life Of Pi

Life of Pi – August 8th, 7:30pm 
Directed by Ang Lee | 2012

Based on the novel of the same name by Yann Martel, Life of Pi follows Piscine “Pi” Patel, a young boy whose family decides to leave their native India for Canada. When the ship they are traveling on sinks, he escapes by climbing onto a lifeboat also boarded by an orangutan, a zebra, a hyena, and a tiger. The lone survivor of this horrible accident, Pi is forced to contend with the wild animals on the boat as it sails across the Pacific Ocean.



Annie – August 15th, 7:30pm
Directed by John Huston | 1982

An orphan in a facility run by the mean Miss Hannigan, Annie believes that her parents left her there by mistake. When a rich man named Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks decides to let an orphan live at his home to promote his image, Annie is selected. While Annie gets accustomed to living in Warbucks’ mansion, she still longs to meet her parents. So Warbucks announces a search for them and a reward, which brings out many frauds.


Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! – August 22nd, 7:30pm
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd | 2008

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on a Greek island is about to marry off the spirited young daughter she’s raised alone. But, the daughter has secretly invited three of her mother’s ex-lovers in the hopes of finding her biological father. Starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Amanda Seyfried and featuring the music of Abba, Mamma Mia is a modern classic best experienced with others on the big screen.


Back To The Future

Back to the Future – August 29th, 7:30pm
Directed by Robert Zemeckis | 1985

Eighties teenager Marty McFly is accidentally sent back in time to 1955, inadvertently disrupting his parents’ first meeting and attracting his mother’s romantic interest. Marty must repair the damage to history by rekindling his parents’ romance and – with the help of his eccentric inventor friend Doc Brown – return to 1985.
