Elliott and Beverly Mantle (Jeremy Irons in dual roles) are renowned identical twin gynecologists operating in the same fertility offices in Toronto. When Elliott, the more social of the two, tires of the patients he romantically involves himself with, he passes them over to the shy Beverly. When a patient named Claire (Geneviève Bujold) enters the picture, Beverly finds himself growing infatuated, disrupting the brothers' routine and putting them both in a stranglehold of obsession and paranoia.
