Saturday, August 22 –
The Holy Mountain (8pm) + Psychomagic, A Healing Art (10:20pm)

And what better place to bring these experiences to you than in the middle of the desert! With major gratitude to Joshua Tree Music Festival promoter Barnett English, we invite you to join us under the canopy of stars at Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground for what is certain to be a mesmerizing weekend in the desert!

The second night of our two-night stop in Joshua Tree opens with the new 4K Restoration of 1973 classic The Holy Mountain! The scandal of the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, Jodorowsky’s flood of sacrilegious imagery and existential symbolism is a surreal sojourn for enlightenment pitting illusion against truth. The Alchemist (Jodorowsky) assembles together an elite group of thieves – ‘industrialists and politicians’ – that represent the planets in the solar system. The master’s adept intention is to put his recruits through strange mystical rites and divest them of their worldly baggage before embarking on a trip to Lotus Island. There they ascend the Holy Mountain to displace the immortal gods who secretly rule the universe. Following his meteoric rise in the wake of El Topo, Alejandro was given a budget of $1 million dollars (equivalent to $4 million today) and total artistic freedom for his follow up project. He wrote the screenplay, designed the sets and costumes, co-wrote the music, directed and acted in the film. He rejected using known or professional actors, and instead employed persons with actual backgrounds that matched their characters for many key roles. The Holy Mountain is a mythical, mystical masterpiece, a Hieronymus Bosch painting come to life – part spiritual quest, part science fiction, part social satire, and completely without comparison.  Click here to watch the film’s trailer!

After a short break, join us for Psychomagic, A Healing Art, Jodorowsky’s new documentary which provides an intimate exploration of the visionary director’s theory of trauma therapy. His unique concept of healing uses performance art as a vehicle to counter deep, debilitating psychic suffering with literal ‘acts of confrontation’ in real world applications. Drawing from a life-long study of philosophy, psychology, ethnology, and world religions, from Freud to shamans, from Kabbalah to Gurdjieff, and everything in between, Jodorowsky’s films have dealt with the individual quest for redemption and enlightenment, the protagonist facing bizarre and provocative challenges that lead to personal catharsis. The film his explores the director’s therapeutic work of Psychomagic using real life subjects in real world situations. Jodorowsky explains and demonstrates Psychomagic’s principles, how it is practiced, and how it is applied. The Maestro works directly with suffering people who are eager to face, resolve, and transcend their personal dilemmas through the use of this radical and transformative mode of performance art therapy. Intercut with scenes from his most famous films, it parallels and explains his intent and vision present from the start of his career, giving new perspective and meaning to his seminal works, while simultaneously breaking the wall between fictional and real.  Click here to watch the film’s trailer.

Portions of Psychomagic, A Healing Art are in Spanish, with English subtitles.

NOTE: Jodorowsky’s films contain nudity and graphic violence.  Viewer discretion strongly advised.

DRIVE-IN FAQ’s

WHAT TIME CAN I ARRIVE?

We cannot place any cars on the lot prior to 5:30PM, so please do not arrive any earlier than this. Guests who arrive earlier than 5:30PM will be asked to come back at 5:30PM, and it’s a difficult turn to make, so please help us avoid that by not trying to get on the lot earlier than 6PM. Cars will be placed on a first-come, first-served basis, one car at a time, and in sections based on size of car and desired style of viewing (i.e. open hatchbacks, etc. – more information below).

WHERE IS JOSHUA TREE LAKE RV & CAMPGROUND

Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground is located at 2601 Sunfair Rd, Joshua Tree, CA 92252.  Click here for map & directions.

I WANT TO STAY OUT THERE FOR THE WEEKEND! CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME RECOMMENDATIONS?

We don’t have any recommendations per se, but we can certainly provide you with some options! For information on staying on the RV Campground itself, visit www.joshuatreelake.com. There are also a lot of AirBnB options out there!

HOW DO I REDEEM MY TICKET?

Upon purchase, ticket will be emailed to you as a PDF attachment from Eventbrite. When you arrive to the event, please show the attendant the bar code on your ticket through your car window, either by holding up your printed version, or by displaying it on your phone or smart device. Attendant will scan it to check you in, and you’ll be good to go!

DO I NEED FM RADIO IN MY CAR?

YES! This is a “silent-style” Drive-In event, with no speakers. The film’s soundtrack will be accessible exclusively through your car’s FM Radio, for maximum social-distance safety. We will provide you with the FM station upon arrival. Make your your car has an FM radio so you can hear the film!

WILL YOU HAVE FOOD AT THIS EVENT?  CAN I BRING FOOD / SNACKS?

YES AND YES! Your car is your screening room — so bring all your favorite screening room snacks! We will also be reaching out to local food trucks to join us, and will update when we’ve got some confirmed!  We don’t imagine any of you would, but we have to ask that you don’t discard your trash out the window. Please help us keep the grounds tidy!

WILL YOU HAVE RESTROOMS?

We will have portable toilets and hand-washing stations on site. As our approval of this event is based on our assurance of safety, we ask that folks wear protective masks when leaving your cars for any reason, including to use the restroom.

REMEMBER TO TURN YOUR ENGINE ON EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE…

As you will be running your battery non-stop so that you can listen to the film on FM, you run the risk of killing your battery. We are always ready to go with the jumper cables for those who need them!, but to eliminate the risk of your battery dying, remember to turn your car on every once in a while.  (Especially if you’re running your air-conditioner — especially in the earlier hours, it gets hot out there!)

…BUT MIND YOUR HEADLIGHTS!

Some cars have headlights that automatically turn on when the engine is turned over. There’s generally a setting to eliminate that — please make an effort to switch that setting so that your headlights don’t beam on when you power on your car, as headlights wipe out the image on the screen. We will have cardboard and tablecloths on hand for cars that may need help with this — let an attendant know if you need materials to cover your headlights.

MIND YOUR DOME LIGHTS AND BRAKE PEDAL

We understand that sometimes you have to flick on the dome light to look for something in your car, but please don’t have your dome light on for a stretched period of time — and certainly, not through the entire film. Any light proves very distracting to the audience around you. And lastly — we understand that it sometimes feels instinctual to do so, but please make an effort to keep your foot off your brake pedal. In a dark environment, brake lights provide quite the surprising glow.

CAN I SIT IN MY TRUCK BED?

– OR –

CAN I PUT MY CONVERTIBLE’S TOP DOWN?

– OR –

CAN I THROW THE HATCH OF MY HATCHBACK UP AND SIT IN THE BACK TO WATCH THE SHOW?

– Please note that tall cars / SUV’s / trucks will be parked in parking areas to the sides of the middle area, or along the back rows, to minimize obstruction of rows behind you.

– Guests are allowed to sit in their truck beds, so long as they keep their protective masks on.

– Guests are allowed to put their tops down, so long as they keep their protective masks on.

– Raised hatches proved quite obstructive to rows of cars behind them in viewing the screen. If you’re absolutely set on sitting in your hatchback with your hatch up, you will be asked to park either to the sides of our car staging area, or along the back rows. And — like truckbeds and convertibles — if your hatch is open, we ask that you keep your masks on. Again, our approval of this event is based on our assurance of absolute safety, with folks keeping masks on when not inside their closed cars.

– For trucks: Please keep in mind that the soundtrack is coming in through FM radio. As such, either have a low-volume FM radio in your truck bed with you, or you can slide open the little window to your truck bed and play through your car stereo at a reasonable volume.

WHAT TIME DOES THE MOVIE START?

We will be starting The Holy Mountain at 8pm, followed by Psychomagic, A Healing Art at 10:20pm.  Gates open at 5:30pm.
