Claire Denis’s Chocolat Opens This Friday

Have this article read to you, listen to it like a podcast

Claire Denis’ stunningly realized directorial debut, Chocolat, arrives in a beautiful new 4K restoration.

A young woman named France (Mireille Perrier) recounts her experiences growing up in Cameroon, West Africa as she returns to her childhood home as an adult. Upon her arrival, her most prominent memories remain that of her family’s “houseboy” — the wise and noble Protée (Isaach de Bankolé). As France’s mind drifts between past and present, the more she comes to understand her and her family’s part in the dividing racial and social relations of her home country.

A staggering and vivid portrait of memory within the confines of post-colonialism, Chocolat announces the deafening arrival of one of world cinema’s most fearless artists.
