Have this article read to you, listen to it like a podcast

Join us for FESTIVAL DE TRASH-MEX, a three-night film festival at The Frida Cinema showcasing what “Trash-Mex” is all about with six genre classic Mexican film screenings, original Mexican film memorabilia displayed in the theater, and more! This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Visit www.calhum.org.

Armando Hernández of Trash-Mex.com partners up with film programmer Michael Aguirre for a curation of Mexican genre films like no other. This is a variety of different genres & titles that have not been played in theaters for many, many years! All films will be presented in the double feature format, two movies for the price of one! The opening night lineup is:

Dimensiones Ocultas:

An innocent game with a ouija board turns into a bloody nightmare when a demon is unleashed from it! A huge staple in 80’s Mexican Trash Horror! Dimensiones Ocultas (also known as “Don’t Panic”) is chockfull of blood, mayhem & even some romance. From director Ruben Galindo Jr. who had also brought upon “Ladrones De Tumbas” & “Cementerio De Terror”.

Navajeros:

Based on real-life teenage criminal “El Jaro” whom caused absolute mayhem in the mean streets of Spain. El Jaro always gets by with a little help from his friends and a very friendly prostitute known as “La Mexicana” (played by legendary Mexican actress Isela Vega). A Spanish/Mexican co-production; Navajeros (also known as “Dulces Navajas”) is one of the most epic & gritty ‘Cine Quinqui’ titles.

Make sure to show up early at 6:00PM for a special DJ set from Rendezvous and custom trailer preshow!

Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this film series do not necessarily represent those of California Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities. We thank California Humanities for their support, without which this series would not be possible.
